August 1 is Emancipation Day.
The day marks the passing of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 which ended the practice of legal slavery across the British Empire, including Canada.
This year is the 3rd official Emancipation Day in Canada. We encourage everyone to educate themselves and reflect on what the day represents. Participate in Emancipation Day events to learn more about the over 400-year history of African Nova Scotians and to continue to address and eradicate systemic anti-Black racism and celebrate freedom and unity.
