They publish. They mentor. They lead. Yet most contract academic staff work term-to-term without long-term security.
More than 80% of CAS say their teaching is central to their institution’s mission, and they're not wrong. Their research, creativity, and care make classrooms better for everyone. Fair employment isn’t just good for faculty — it’s good for students and communities, too. Their passion for teaching strengthens universities and enriches student learning. They deserve fairness.
ANSUT is working with the DFA and CUPE3912 to highlight precarious employment in PSE during Fair Employment Week, October 20 -24, 2025.

It’s Fair Employment Week — and the irony couldn’t be clearer. CUPE Local 3912 members are on strike, fighting for the very thing this week stands for: fair pay and job security.
Contract Academic Staff are researchers, community builders, and extraordinary teachers. Yet more than half juggle multiple short-term contracts just to make ends meet. Imagine the potential if their work was valued with stability and fair compensation.
ANSUT stands in solidarity with CUPE 3912 and all Contract Academic Staff who are demanding fairness, respect, and recognition.

During Fair Employment Week (October 20-24, 2025), ANSUT is working with Dalhousie Faculty Association and CUPE Local 3912 to showcase the value that contract academic workers bring to their universities and their students.
CAS are the backbone of many academic programs — teaching up to 50% of undergraduate courses in some faculties. They bring real-world expertise and fresh ideas, but too often without security or benefits. It’s time to value their work fairly.
Every day, but especially today, as CUPE Local 3912 workers begin their strike for fair working conditions at Mount Saint Vincent University, let's show them that we value their contributions.

This is CAUT Fair Employment Week. DFA member Becca Babcock has been an LTA at Dalhousie Universityfor 4 years."I'd like to focus on my students, rather than worry about unemployment." Long-term needs filled by short-term contracts does not foster a strong and healthy academic environment.
DFA has partnered with ANSUT and CUPE Nova Scotia to highlight a few of our members on precarious employment.

Contract faculty bring the world into the classroom — with research expertise, fresh perspectives, and lived experience. Behind every meaningful lecture and breakthrough research project are educators who believe in their students. Yet more than 60% lack job security beyond a single term. Fair work for them means stronger education for everyone.

Atlantic School of Theology Statement on Recent Antisemitic Vandalism in Halifax
The Atlantic School of Theology is appalled by the antisemitic vandalism that occurred at two synagogues and the Chabad-Lubavitch of the Maritimes Rohr Family Institute in our community this past weekend. We unequivocally condemn these acts of hatred.
As a theological institution dedicated to fostering interfaith dialogue, mutual respect and peace, our hearts go out to the members of Shaar Shalom and Beth Israel synagogues and all who have been impacted by this hateful act. An attack on one faith community is an attack on us all.
The school stands in profound solidarity with our Jewish neighbours and friends in Halifax and across the region.
At this time, we are called to increase our efforts to build a society where love and understanding overcome fear and hatred. We are also called to actively work against hatred in all its forms and to show our support for those who have been targeted.
We encourage our entire community to pray for and support the Jewish people in this difficult time. We also encourage everyone to stand together against antisemitism and to join in the ongoing work of building a more just and compassionate society.

The Dalhousie University Board of Governors' "offer" for interest arbitration won't resolve this. They are just creating further delays. Real, meaningful bargaining - on the issues our members told us were important to them - is what is required. Stop with the stunts, let's get back to the table and talk.
