Starting January 21, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is introducing changes to open work permit (OWP) eligibility for family members of international students and foreign workers.

Key Changes:
Spouses of International Students
Eligible only if the student is enrolled in:
-Master’s programs (16+ months)
-Doctoral programs
-Select professional or eligible programs

Spouses of Foreign Workers
-Eligible only if the worker is employed in:
-TEER 0 or 1 occupations
-Select TEER 2 or 3 occupations in high-demand sectors (e.g., healthcare, construction, education).
-The worker must also have at least 16 months left on their work permit.

Renewals & Exemptions:
-Existing valid OWPs remain unaffected.
-Renewals are possible for in-Canada family members if they meet the same criteria and the requested duration of the renewal matches the existing study or work permit of the principle applicant
Spouses of workers under free-trade agreements or transitioning to PR are exempt from these changes.
