Free Admission
Art Gallery of Georgina
July 1st- August 10th

Opening Reception
July 1st, 12pm-2pm

See 60 paintings by the Group of Seven, their students, their teachers and their colleagues!

Rookleys Canadian Art is pleased to partner with the Art Gallery of Georgina to present The Group of Seven and Their Circle, a special exhibition featuring works from both permanent collections.

The Group of Seven holds a central place in Canadian art history. Through their paintings of the Canadian landscape, the Group helped establish a distinctly national artistic identity in the early twentieth century. Yet their story extends beyond the founding members themselves. Surrounding the Group was a circle of artists, students, colleagues, and contemporaries whose contributions expanded the movement’s influence across Canada.

Alongside works by Group of Seven members including A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael, Frank Johnston, Edwin Holgate, and A.J. Casson, visitors will see paintings by artists such as Doris McCarthy, John William Beatty, Ralph Burton, Frederick Stanley Haines, Nora Collyer, Robert Pilot, Albert Chiarandini, and others whose careers intersected with or were influenced by the Group.

Art Gallery of Georgina
July 1st- August 10th

Rookleys Canadian Art is pleased to partner with the Art Gallery of Georgina to present The Group of Seven and Their Circle, a special exhibition featuring works from both permanent collections.

The Group of Seven holds a central place in Canadian art history. Through their paintings of the Canadian landscape, the Group helped establish a distinctly national artistic identity in the early twentieth century. Yet their story extends beyond the founding members themselves. Surrounding the Group was a circle of artists, students, colleagues, and contemporaries whose contributions expanded the movement’s influence across Canada.

This exhibition examines the relationships that connected these individuals to the Group of Seven and explores how ideas, techniques, and approaches to landscape painting were shared across generations. By placing celebrated Group of Seven paintings in conversation with works by their contemporaries and successors, the exhibition reveals the far-reaching impact of their ideas and highlights the people that contributed to the development of Canadian art throughout the twentieth century.

Alongside works by Group of Seven members including A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael, Frank Johnston, Edwin Holgate, and A.J. Art inspired by the feeling of escaping into nature. Inspired by the forests and mountains of British Columbia, Helen Utsal’s work captures this feeling. Wishing to convey her awe of British Columbias majestic beauty, Helen uses unique colour palettes, and compositions that often place the viewer on the edge of the landscape, inviting them to enter, look up, feel hopeful and connected.

Helen Utsal is an award-winning contemporary landscape painter living and
working on Vancouver Island. Spending time in Nature is a critical aspect of her inspiration and art practice. It is her space for meditation, curiosity, creation and renewal.
