LittleTree Garden Market
🆕 We’ve got one very lonely Acer griseum left. Known as the ‘Paperbark maple,’ this small to sized ornamental tree (8m x 5m) possesses trifoliate dark green foliage, that turn fiery orange and red in the Fall. Its foliage is known for its highly ornamental bark, that peel in thin, papery curls, revealing bright cinnamon-red wood beneath. In Spring, it produces small yellow flowers, followed by winged samaras with large seeds.
A definite conversation piece for the dappled shaded woodland garden. It is intolerant of drought so please keep the soil adequately moist throughout the growing season. 🆕
PDB Favourites
Calycanthus ‘Hartlage Wine,’ aka ‘Sweetshrub,’ is a sublime multi stemmed shrub known for its striking wine infused flowers. It is a cross between C. chinensis X C. Florida (Carolina allspice) developed at the J.C Raulston arboretum at NCSU.
With an overall height and spread of 3m, its arching branches carry sublime flowers that appear two to three times in one season. Its foliage is reminiscent of the more diva like Magnolia, and unlike Magnolia, it puts forth its first flowers well after the threat of frost has passed. What’s not to love about this beauty?
It prefers well draining soil, and will tolerate both sun and shade. A dappled location ensures maximum flower potential. PDB has installed one to create a living screen between the street and his veranda.
