Did anyone else get hit by a minimum property tax increase this Year?
The Minimum Tax only affected properties under $75000. They Raised the Minimum Tax from $550 to $750 this May. All the higher priced homes have not had a property tax increase in 10 years. Yet they introduced the minimum tax 12 years ago and they have only raised the minimum tax since. So again only the lower priced homes have been hit with tax increases in the past ten years. How fair is that?
If you own a home assessed at $40,000 you should be paying the tax rate of 9.75% which would be $360, but the Town adds $390 to bring it up to the minimum tax of $750. If your property is assessed at $60,000 you should be paying $585 but the town adds an extra $165, just to bring it up to the minimum tax of $750.
Some of our seniors and people on disability had a tax hike of $200
We believe that if the Town would have raised the tax rate by 1/4 % they would have raised more funds and everyone would have been treated equally. The council believes that it would have been too much of a burden on the seniors in the higher priced homes. If you do the math, a $300,000 property would have had a tax hike of $75. , yet it was okay to raise the minimum tax on the lower priced homes by $200.
We have formed a committee to oppose this minimum tax and we will be attending the Town Council Meeting Tuesday Sept. 19. If you want to support our cause please join us at 6:50 at the Town office. The more people that show up and show their opposition, the better chance we have of having council reverse their decision.
We are also carrying a petition which you can sign in support. Please contact us if you wish to sign the petition.
