Over the past week, the Estevan Leisure Centre has seen a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases linked to variants of concern (VOC). To help address this risk, the City of Estevan is taking the proactive step of closing the Estevan Leisure Centre, effective May 5th, at 4:30 pm as a precaution.

This closure comes on the advice of the Saskatchewan Public Health Authority and will be in effect until further notice.

“The safety of the community and our employees is our main priority,” stated Rod March, Leisure Services, Parks and Facilities manager. “We don’t yet know how long the closure will last. We will continue to be guided by the province’s public health officials in taking action to protect residents and visitors from COVID-19.”

The closure affects all programming and both indoor and outdoor services in the Estevan Leisure Centre.

Some fitness classes will continue as virtual programs for the importance of physical health and well-being. The Southeast Regional Library will remain open with access from exterior doors only.

Customers’ accounts will be extended for the duration of the closure.

This tough guy could fill an arena! Anyone remember what number he wore?

Side note - He was also at the top of many lists of hockey player crushes. (mine included)😍

🏒ALUMNI FEATURE: Stephen Moon - D ('76) from Riceton, SK!

🚨 STATS: (1993-97) 240GP, 47G, 87A, 134PTS, 586PIM

🐻 HOCKEY CAREER: Stephen Moon joined the Bruins as a 17-year-old defenceman and immediately became one of the most imposing blueliners in the SJHL. The 6'5", 230+lbs farm kid from Riceton ended up playing all four of his junior seasons in Estevan, with Moon serving as an Assistant captain in 95-96 and being named captain for his final season in 96-97. Moon is still the franchise leader in Games Played for the Bruins, with 240GP over 4 seasons.

🏒 POST-BRUINS: Moon received a scholarship to Merrimack College where he played 3 seasons for the Warriors from 1999-2001 and earned a double-major in accounting and finance. As he was finishing up with Merrimack, Moon received an invite to the NHL's Dallas Stars rookie camp. Moon impressed there and was then invited to the Stars' main camp where he was scheduled to play in a rookies-game against the Florida Panthers, but NHL preseason games were abruptly cancelled after the September 11th terrorist attacks. All the players were sent home and Moon decided to begin his post-hockey career by taking over the family farm. Moon still lives and farms at home in Riceton with his wife and children.
