Standing like a medieval fortress beside the Trans-Canada Highway, Castle Mountain is one of the most iconic landmarks in Banff National Park. Rising 2,766 metres (9,075 feet) above sea level, its towering limestone cliffs and castle-like ramparts were formed from ancient limestone deposited over 300 million years ago, then uplifted during the creation of the Canadian Rockies.

Did you know? From 1946 to 1979, Castle Mountain was officially renamed Mount Eisenhower to honor General Dwight D. Eisenhower for his leadership during World War II. Due to strong public support, the original name, Castle Mountain, was restored in 1979. Today, one of its prominent peaks is still known as Eisenhower Tower in his honor.
