Let’s be clear - there is no place for hate - not today, not ever.

Today was heavy. It was equal parts emotionally devastating to see the hate that filled our streets, yet hope inducing to see the even larger counter protests in most cities across the country. Tears came to our eyes as we watched people from all walks of life stand up, shoulder to shoulder with trans youth and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in the battle for their human rights.

Let us be absolutely clear - the presence of trans, q***r and 2SLGBTQIA+ folks is not new. They have always been here and always will be. The policies being enacted across multiple provinces that will force teachers and educators to out their students, not only goes against the human rights code of Canada, they are dangerous policies that will cause significant harm and other untold consequences to trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. School for many is a safe place that allows them to be their authentic selves, especially when they live in a home that does not affirm who they are. These policies take that away from them.

Here at the Un-Wedding Movement, not only are we a q***r owned business, but we hold fast to our core value of belonging above all else.

We strive to be a safe place for our clients, their guests, our staff and contractors, our third party vendors and any other stakeholders we work with, to be able to show up as their authentic selves. We believe that love is love and that it deserves to be celebrated in all its beautiful forms.

The hate we saw today is not our Canada. Our Canada is a beautiful tapestry of people from all walks of life, like those that showed up in today’s counter protests to fight for basic human rights and dignity for trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. That’s the Canada we will fight for and can be proud to be part of.

This is no place for hate. So in the words of Bob Dylan, “Be groovy or leave, man.”
