Multiplying Equality

This past weekend we were able to host our second Community Clean Cuts (C3) at Boyle Street Community Services! Our C3 event is intended to meet people where they are at and provide free haircuts to community members experiencing homelessness, and who are unable to afford to afford this luxury on a monthly basis. With the community response we received from last year, we decided to run this event again. This year, over 80 haircuts were done in a span of 4 hours with the assistance of Edmontonian barbers and hairdressers from Avenue Salon (Rufaro, Ashlea, and Loral), Ponytails and Horseshoes Salon (Barb, Tom, and Mel), Jenny Hoang, and Lawrence Woo.
When you go for a regular haircut/styling, you are able to spend invaluable time speaking to the stylist and others around; here, members of the Edmonton community were able to share meaningful conversations, and engage in a further understanding of one another.
A portrait photographer, Jordan Hon, was a new addition to this year’s event, and it had more implications that we could have wished for. Community members are able to receive images of themselves, family, and friends. We often think of the immediate and physical needs behind homelessness, but we don’t go beyond to understand what other needs can be met. The pictures are a reminder of a network they are part of, and that they are not as isolated as they might feel.
This event could not be possible without the collaboration of Boyle Street staff, hairdressers and barbers, a professional photographer, and Multiplying Equality volunteers!
