As a breast-cancer researcher, my mother often worked late nights and sometimes weekends. On those days, my sister and I spent a lot of time at the Sheltons', who lived two doors down from us.

Mrs. Shelton ran a nursery school below our apartment and poured so much love into the families of our community. She was like a second mother to me and influenced how I lead today. This Black History Month, I'm thinking of her and all the Black women on whose shoulders I stand.
