On June 17, 1958, two spans of Vancouver’s Second Narrows Bridge (the crossing now known as the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing) collapsed during construction and fell into Burrard Inlet. Seventy-nine workers were on the structure at the time and fell more than 30 metres. Nineteen people died and others were seriously injured, making it one of British Columbia’s most significant workplace disasters.
The collapse triggered rescue and recovery operations on the water and led to formal investigations into what happened and how major bridge construction sites manage temporary works, load paths, and worker protection.

B.C. is changing course on the $4.15B Fraser River Tunnel Project after ending its commercial agreement with the Cross Fraser Partnership.
Instead of moving ahead under one major contract, the province plans to retender the remaining work through multiple smaller bidding packages. The goal is to increase competition, open the door for more local and Canadian contractors, and seek better value for taxpayers.
The project will replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with a new eight-lane immersed-tube tunnel. While the main contract is being restructured, early works are still moving ahead, with utility relocations, site prep, temporary infrastructure, and roughly 200 workers active on site.
Major construction is still expected to begin in 2027.
