Having an offer accepted on your home may seem like cause for celebration. Here are 13 things that warrant extra attention during your home inspection.

You can hire an inspector to look over the unit you are thinking of buying and the building’s superintendent or management agent should be able to give the inspector access to the roof, basement, and other shared spaces that may require future repairs.

During the inspection you want to check that all of the appliances, electric outlets, and circuit breakers are working.

You should also do a walk-through the day of the closing. “Make sure everything is still in order, that the apartment upstairs didn’t have a big leak the night before your closing,” says Kee.

Inspections for condos and co-ops

Home inspections aren’t just for houses: you should consider one for an apartment purchase too. Buying a unit in a larger multiple-dwelling structure, such as a high-rise apartment building, means you’ll need to look for things you wouldn’t have to if you bought yourself a single-family house.
