Many people today describe CPTED using terms like “1st generation,” “2nd generation,” or even “3rd generation.” But CPTED does not actually evolve in generations.

In this new article, Art Hushen explains why CPTED is better understood as a shared professional framework built on consistent principles rather than a series of generational phases.

The core CPTED principles remain the same:

• Natural Surveillance
• Natural Access Control
• Territorial Reinforcement
• Maintenance

What continues to expand is the number of professionals applying those principles—from planners and architects to law enforcement, public health professionals, educators, and community leaders.

Understanding CPTED this way strengthens collaboration across professions and keeps the focus where it belongs: creating safer, healthier communities through thoughtful design and engagement.
