Mulch can do wonders for your trees and shrubs, but only when it’s applied correctly.

One of the most common mistakes we see is the “mulch volcano” (or mulch-cano), where mulch is piled high against the trunk. Excessive mulch around the base of a tree can trap moisture, encourage decay, and lead to root and bark problems over time.

A properly applied mulch ring helps conserve soil moisture, moderate soil temperatures, and reduce competition from grass and weeds. The key is keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk and applying it at the proper depth.
