Fascinating!

BMJ published a case, by Fisher and colleagues, in 1995 of a construction worker who had jumped onto a plank at his worksite and landed on a 7 inch nail. The nail pierced right through his boot. Understandably, the construction worker was in exquisite pain. He was taken to ER, and given opioids to treat the pain.

When the ER doctors removed the boot, they discovered something absolutely incredible. 😲 The nail had passed between his toes, and the worker was not injured at all!

🤔So why was he in so much pain?

The pain was ABSOLUTELY REAL and required opioids to reduce.

Here is what pain science tells us likely happened:
🧠 The construction worker’s brain took in the situation (the visual of the nail through his boot, knowledge of his work environment being dangerous, other people’s reactions) and made a guess that he should be in A LOT of pain. From all the information his brain had, it deduced he was in grave danger, and created a pain sensation to get him to protect his “injured” limb. 🧠

This famous case illustrates just how powerful our brains are in the production of the pain experience.

And it underlines why pain education and involving our minds in recovery from chronic pain is so important. 🙌

Pain science informed physiotherapists are aware that the brain plays an important role in chronic pain - and they use this knowledge to benefit their patients with chronic pain by helping to re-train the brain while rehabilitating the body.

Aaron Jones PT has a special interest in persistent pain care, and his personal experience of recovery from persistent pain illustrated to him how important it is to have a mind and body approach to chronic pain.

Looking forward to seeing your friendly faces again! Stay safe and healthy folks, we’re getting closer to being able to reopen but we have to make sure our protocols are in place first. Big hugs to all!

Hello Westshore Massage Therapy Community!

The Premier announced yesterday that the closure mandate over Massage Therapy Clinics will be lifted sometime after May 19th. The message was somewhat vague as we have to wait for the College to get our new practice protocol guidelines approved by the PHO. We will then get a green light and out of an abundance of caution and care for your safety and ours, we will take the necessary time to correctly implement the new protocols and changes to the clinic without haste. Our hope is to re-open June 1st but we will update as soon as we have a definite date. We are all looking forward to seeing you very soon!
