Did you know? The d’Esterre Seniors’ Centre began with a vision from local seniors in the early 1970s who wanted a dedicated place to connect and stay active. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, community supporters, and the Rotary Club of Comox, the Centre opened its doors at 1801 Beaufort Avenue in 1976 and has been bringing people together ever since.

Today, we celebrate not only 50 years of history, but also the thousands of friendships, memories, and community connections that have been made along the way.

Whether you're a current member, former member, longtime supporter, or visiting for the first time, we cannot wait to celebrate with you!

New Update : The CVRD is sharing an update on shellfish and beach debris monitoring results
➡️Fisheries and Oceans Canada has revoked all emergency closures for shellfish that were put in place immediately following the sewage leak on May 26. All sample results have met standards outlined in the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program.
➡️Following on reports of toilet paper being found on area beaches – particularly Royston – the CVRD and environmental consultants have completed sampling and confirmed that the debris in question is dried, bleached seaweed. It is not related to the sewage leak. If you’re a beach user and spot something of concern, the CVRD invites you to submit reports to 250-334-6000.

Some preliminary, encouraging news from the Comox Valley Regional District - Local Government

CVRD News: Water quality advisory lifted for majority of Comox Harbour and Estuary
The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is lifting a precautionary advisory for water activities in most of Comox Harbour and Estuary, following the results of extensive water quality testing over the past week.

Testing completed since a sewage leak on May 26 has shown that areas outside of the immediate spill area (on the east side of the Comox Harbour Authority wharf) are consistently showing safe results for water activities.

Island Health uses testing for Enterococcus as primary indicator for swimming safety, with guidance that water is safe when results are below 35 CFU/100mL. All tests since the day of the spill that are outside of the immediate spill area (55 total) have been below 6 CFU/100mL, with most at or below 1 CFU/100mL. Testing has been completed at varying depths. This has included testing at key recreational sites such as the middle of Comox Harbour, “Little Mexico”, Goose Spit, Gartley Beach, Courtenay River entrance, Lewis Park, Pt. Holmes and Tree Island. The west side of the Comox Harbour wharf is also deemed safe.

Test results are being collated and will be published on the project webpage by end of week.

An update on next steps following May 26 sewer leak:

Water quality testing and modelling, along with an investigation into the May 26 sewer leak are continuing, with the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) anticipating an update on the estuary’s water safety by the end of this week.

The CVRD has been completing extensive water quality testing since the day of the event, focusing first on the immediate harbour area around the leak, and then expanding to further offshore and recreational beach areas.

Modelling is underway to understand how the contaminated water is moving. The results of these dispersion models will guide CVRD advisories about water use and are expected by end of week (June 5).

The cause of the leak is currently under investigation. More information will be shared with the community when available, however, there is no current time estimate for those results to be available.
