🌾N U T R I T I O N🌾
Nutrition is one of my favourite elements of equine therapy. I believe it is a top factor that has an impact on a horse’s day to day living, comfort, and performance.
I use a tool called applied kinesiology, or muscle testing, to help determine which feeds and supplements are either needed or unwanted by the horse’s body on an energetic level. This works by asking the ”body” if it is stronger or weaker in the presence of a “stimulus” (certain grain, hay, supplement, herb, etc), and then asking if it is necessary or not for the body at the time. I also ask the amount, duration, and time(s) of day it should be fed.
Here are some of my favourite supplements that have shown success in some cases I have worked with.
ALOE: May help with digestive health, especially in reducing or preventing ulcers, by aiding in mucous and gastric acid production. Also an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial. Research has shown pain relieving and wound healing benefits.
TURMERIC: Anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial. Commonly fed to horses for lameness or arthritic issues and equine metabolic syndrome. One study conducted showed six horses with fetlock arthritis where three were placed on turmeric, and after 10 days all three horses appeared to be more mobile and have a better mood. The three horses who were not supplemented with turmeric did not appear to have a change in mobility or mood. Also cost effective!
OMEGA ALPHA HA-180: A hyaluronic acid supplement for joint health. Contains 180mg of HA, as well as 94mg of licorice root which can be helpful to the digestive system. This particular HA supplement has the highest dose of HA I have came across on the shelf, and was more cost effective than others. My own horse is currently on it after I had a concern about a stifle, and has appeared to show a difference in her joint movement after 10 days.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
*Supplementing does not replace veterinary care.
*Do your research on supplements! If buying a brand name supplement, I always read the ingredients and compare different labels to see the difference in quantities and how they compare to the price.
*Every horse is different, so what works for one may not work for the next.
Hope everyone is having a great long weekend💕
