Do you have outdoor house lights? did you know....

Certified vs Non-Certified Permanent Lighting Systems

Not all permanent exterior lighting systems are installed to the same standard.

When considering permanent lighting, homeowners should look for:
✔ UL / cUL / CSA listed components
✔ Weather-resistant enclosures rated for exterior use
✔ Proper fuse and overcurrent protection
✔ Sealed cable entries and moisture protection
✔ Neat, professionally managed wiring
✔ Proper low-voltage Class 2 power supplies
✔ Properly secured and protected exterior wiring
✔ GFCI-protected exterior receptacles where required

Poorly installed or non-certified systems may be more susceptible to:
⚠ Moisture intrusion
⚠ Corrosion and premature failure
⚠ Loose or exposed wiring
⚠ Electrical safety concerns
⚠ Reduced long-term reliability in Calgary’s climate

Calgary’s freeze/thaw cycles, snow, UV exposure, and moisture can be especially hard on exterior electrical components, making proper installation and weather protection extremely important.

Homeowners should also understand that permanent lighting systems often involve:
• Exterior electrical connections
• Penetrations through soffits or siding
• Low-voltage power distribution
• Transformers and controllers
• Routing and securing wiring around the home exterior

Depending on the installation method, permits and qualified electrical trades may be required. Work involving household electrical systems, new circuits, or hardwired components should be completed in accordance with applicable electrical codes and manufacturer requirements.

As always, homeowners are encouraged to hire qualified, insured professionals using certified outdoor-rated components designed for Canadian weather conditions.
