Many sources within the cannabis community posit that the effects of CBD can be magnified and enhanced when combined with THC. Sometimes, this is referred to as the entourage effect – an effect that enhances both CBD and THC. For this reason, CBD isolates have been on their way out. However, a recently published study has found that the entourage effect may not be all that effective. The study found that those who took CBD with THC experienced greater side effects, such as dry eyes, feeling sick, and cognitive difficulties. Researchers hypothesized that these effects were due to the interaction between CBD and THC, given that CBD appeared to inhibit the metabolism of some pharmacokinetics (e.g., Δ9-THC) which elevated their plasma levels relative to those who took THC alone, increasing the adverse effects of THC. However, there are only a few studies that have explored the acute interaction of CBD and THC so it is hard to be certain that the interaction will always be negative – or won’t sometimes be effective.

Last week we talked about Raphael Mechoulam and the important discoveries him and his research team have made about CBD. Initially, Mechoulam was envisioning a rapid lift off from these initial discoveries given the wide variety of therapeutic applications that CBD was capable of. However, research and clinical studies were quickly halted due to strict drag laws around the world. While THC activates CB1 and CB2 receptors, when THC binds to CB2 receptors it does not elicit any psychoactive effects since CB2 receptors do not accumulate in the brain, but it does cause a psychoactive effect when it binds to CB1 (a receptor in the central nervous system). Thus, research began to focus on how to utilize the healing effects of cannabis while bypassing the psychoactive high that comes from stimulating CB1 receptors. This is an especially desirable facet of research given that CB2 receptors are found in many important areas across the body meaning that its signalling causes a cascade of profound metabolic, psychiatric, autoimmune, and neurocognitive therapeutic effects. Stay tuned for more information about where research in this area is headed.

Dr. Annabelle Manalo-Morgan is an up and coming advocate for the use of cannabis in the holistic treatment of medical conditions. Her son, Macario, was born into a medical emergency, suffering a stroke and up to 500 seizures a day. While doctors searched desperately for something to help Macario’s symptoms, they were still empty handed 5 weeks later. At this time, Macario withstood a 9-hour surgery where surgeons removed 38% of his brain. It was predicted that Macario would be paralyzed on the right half of his body, progressing no more than a newborn baby at 6 months old. After battling with her dad through his stage 4 cancer diagnosis, Dr. Manalo-Morgan was no stranger to thinking outside the box for personalized treatment plans. She claims that she wants to know more than how to treat something, but why that treatment works. Thus, when it came to her son’s condition, she began to use her intuition and knowledge about cannabis to treat him. Growing her own cannabis, she began to treat Macario’s condition. Within 2 days, Macario showed incredible signs of improvement. His eyes began to move, he began to crawl, and within a year he was walking. Today, at 7 years old, Macario has no special needs despite missing 38% of his brain! This goes to show the incredible capacity of the brain to rewire and compensate for damages, as well as the importance of relying on holistic lines of treatment to approach the disorders that harm us. With her work already making waves, it’ll be exciting to see what Dr. Manalo-Morgan does next.
