The lab results came back and SAIT students are showing serious signs of success . 🧪

In this photo, you can see a machine called a spectrophotometer, which shines UV light through water samples and measures how much light they absorb. The basic principle is each chemical compound absorbs or transmits light over a certain range of wavelength.

By learning to use the spectrophotometer, students in the MacPhail School of Energy's water-focused programs, whether Integrated Water Management and Water and Wastewater Treatment Operations, are well-equipped with the skills to test and learn what's in the H2O around us. 💧

Rozlynn Wick is sparking curiosity to help young girls explore the skilled trades. ✨

“I never even knew a career in the trades was an option,” says Rozlynn Wick (M.Ed., PMP), Associate Director, Strategic Youth Initiatives, SAIT. “I could have been the best plumber in the world, but it was never presented as a program or career path to me. What if there are other girls out there who didn’t know this was a choice?”

Since starting at SAIT in 2012, Roz has been working to make sure youth know all of their options for future careers. Her team collaborates with all SAIT Schools in the development of intentional pathways which introduce youth to careers and post-secondary programs. 🎒🛠️ It’s a journey that can begin when elementary-aged kids are exploring their interests, all the way up through junior high and high school, when youth are making decisions for the future.

Some of SAIT’s youth programs are specifically designed for girls.

During Exploring Skilled Trades for Girls, female-identifying students in Grades 8 and 9 can come to SAIT’s main campus for workshops and activities related to careers in the trades. Girls who attend this event can try out a wide variety of different trades, from roofing to glazier, woodworking to refrigeration. The girls are supported throughout the day by female instructors as well as female mentors from industry. 👷‍♀️

If something catches their eye, they can get hands-on in weeklong summer camps like Carpentry: Tools and Foundations, STEAM Builders and Welding for Girls (beginner or intermediate).

While girls are welcome to sign up for whatever camp they’d like, the “For Girls” version of these camps give them a chance to build confidence in a female-only cohort if that’s how they feel most comfortable.

As youth continue to explore their interests, they can also begin to take steps toward post-secondary education. Through dual-credit programs, youth in Grades 11 and 12 can dive deeper into subjects and go as far as to earn credit or a SAIT credential.

Roz’s team is ready to welcome young people of all ages and gender identities to campus to take learning into their own hands. 🤝

“There are trades pathways that young people might be unfamiliar with, and part of our job is to open their eyes to the possibilities.“

What makes the AltaLink Simulator Lab one of the coolest learning spaces in SAIT's MacPhail School of Energy? 🤔

Electrical Engineering Technology students use this massive piece of equipment to simulate and study all the components of a power system similar to Alberta’s grid — from generation and transmission to distribution and system protection. In other words, they use it to power an entire simulated province. ⚡

Students test theoretical concepts learned throughout their program and see what would happen in a real system:

💡 They learn how to synchronize generated electricity with the existing grid, then send some of it through a transmission system.

🏠 The power is then distributed for residential or commercial purposes, and carefully monitored to protect simulated equipment, such as power lines and transformers.

“The unit is quite powerful as a learning tool — it’s custom-built and allows us to simulate a power system as real as we can,” says Darko Stelkic, Academic Chair, MacPhail School of Energy.

“Our program puts theoretical knowledge into practice with specialized hands-on training that’s useful from day one of entering the workforce.”

Fun fact: SAIT was the first Canadian post-secondary institution to have a leading-edge power system simulator, sponsored by AltaLink.

“Trust your journey. The future begins the moment you believe in yourself.” ✈️🌎

Kanika Sehgal was living in India when she decided she wanted to further her skills in data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to break into the global market.

SAIT’s Data Science certificate program — designed specifically for international students — was her first choice.

Summoning the courage to take a chance on herself, Sehgal packed her bags, hugged her child and husband goodbye for now and flew to Calgary to start the year-long program.

Just like that, Sehgal found herself immersed in a new culture as she dove into the world of data, cloud technology, machine learning and AI at SAIT.

“If you’re an enthusiast towards AI, this is the best course,” she says. “It will give you the real hands-on experience and the exposure of the Canadian market.”

After earning her certificate, in a full circle moment, Sehgal landed an internship with Braintoy, the organization that taught the machine learning component of her course.

Video description: From a low angle, we see one of the iconic towers of SAIT's Heritage Hall building as the mounted Canadian flag blows in the wind. We meet the video's subject, Kanika Sehgal, attending various classes and conferences. As she talks about her life in India, we see clips of her day-to-day interactions back home with friends and family and the emotional moment she waves goodbye to them at the airport. Transitioning to shots of Calgary's downtown cityscape and SAIT, we then see Kanika interacting with Data Science course material, using technology and presenting to classmates. Seated interview segments with Kanika are dispersed throughout the video. It ends as the camera slowly tracks around Kanika as she gazes out at the inside of Heritage Hall from the second level balcony.
