May 19 marks World Family Doctor Day – an opportunity to recognize the important role primary care plays in supporting the health and well-being of Albertans.

At Health Quality Alberta, we support family physicians and primary care teams with programs that provide meaningful insights to inform quality improvement efforts and strengthen patient care.

The Primary Care Patient Experience Survey helps clinics better understand the patient perspective. The Primary Care Panel Reports provide actionable data to support preventative care and practice improvement.

Together, these programs are designed to support data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement in primary care settings across Alberta.

After receiving a diagnosis, patients across Alberta repeatedly shared they lacked clear, consistent information about what to expect on their care journey.

The Provincial Pathways Unit brought together patient advisors from across Alberta to create 20 diagnosis-specific patient pathways. Patient advisors shaped the language and design of each of them – as well as the corresponding clinical pathways for providers. Patient advisors challenged medical jargon and helped ensure information is patient-friendly. Now, patients and providers can rely on guidance that matches and was built together. This supports better conversations, shared decision-making, and stronger relationships, and it supports patients to take an active role in their health journey.
