Our team recently had the opportunity to support an important environmental initiative at our client site: safely relocating previously identified woodpecker nesting cavities from planned clearing areas to donor trees outside the mining area.
Working under a federally issued permit and alongside a dedicated Environmental Biologist, this multi‑contractor effort showcased what’s possible when expertise, planning, and environmental stewardship come together.
A few highlights from the project:
🔸Collaborative Ex*****on: From access creation and tree clearing to environmental oversight and final attachment of cavities to donor trees, this work scope relied on seamless coordination across multiple contractors. Our team was responsible for transporting and reinstalling the cut‑out cavities, many measuring 10–20 feet in length and varying widely in size and weight.
🔸Responsible Relocation: With donor trees pre‑selected by the project Biologist, our Powerline team carefully collected, handled, and reattached each cavity to its new host tree. Every cavity was logged, oriented, and installed to closely match its original position, ultimately supporting long‑term habitat stability and ongoing monitoring.
🔸Challenging Winter Conditions: Deep snow and cold temperatures added complexity to complete the work ahead of the upcoming bird nesting season. Thanks to strong coordination between all contractors, the team delivered the project safely and efficiently.
This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting our clients to protect wildlife and the natural environment while meeting the needs of complex industrial operations. A big thank‑you to everyone involved for their professionalism, adaptability, and teamwork!

We’re proud to celebrate one of the inspiring emerging tradespeople we’ve had the privilege to work with: Tashawn Laboucan.
Tashawn recently completed his practicum with us as part of Portage College’s Pre Apprenticeship Welding program, supported through Trade Pathways. From day one, his dedication, curiosity, and work ethic stood out.
Through Trade Pathways funding, Tashawn gained essential PPE, tools, and several key certifications, equipping him to step onto site with confidence. He also earned his Class 5 driver’s license, building even more independence as he begins his career in the trades.
During his time with our team, Tashawn demonstrated skill, determination, and a genuine passion for welding. We’re grateful to have supported him as he built hands-on experience, grew his confidence, and took meaningful strides toward his apprenticeship goals.
In his own words:
“I greatly appreciate the help I received from Stuart Olson, Beth, and everyone from Portage College. The support and guidance I received gave me what I needed to succeed.”
Tashawn is now progressing through his welding apprenticeship at Portage College, and we’re thrilled to be part of his journey. His achievements are a powerful reminder of what’s possible when students, educators, and industry partners work together.
Congratulations, Tashawn! Your future in the trades is bright, and we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!
