Alberta continues to lead the country in insurance premium inflation, with both home and auto rates rising at levels significantly above the national average. These increases are driven by a combination of severe weather events, rising repair and rebuild costs, supply‑chain pressures, and higher claim frequency.
Auto Insurance Premiums - Year‑over‑Year Increase
Auto insurance in Alberta has seen a 21.3% year‑over‑year increase, the highest in Canada. This surge reflects elevated vehicle repair costs, increased collision severity, and ongoing inflation in parts and labour.
• Alberta auto premiums: +21.3% YoY
• National auto average: +11.1% YoY
• CPI auto insurance (Apr 2025 → Apr 2026): +22.7%
This means Alberta drivers are experiencing nearly double the national rate of increase, placing additional pressure on affordability and renewal outcomes.
Alberta’s insurance premiums haven’t risen randomly they’ve followed the real cost of keeping people protected. Auto premiums climbed faster due to parts shortages, labour inflation, and higher claims severity. Home premiums rose more steadily, driven by rebuild cost inflation and supply chain pressure.
When the cost of repairing or rebuilding increases, insurance adjusts to match the real risk. This chart shows how those pressures have shaped Alberta’s market over the last six years.
