The Calgary Police Service is advising that catalytic converter thefts are once again trending upward, with approximately 90 thefts already reported in 2026. These incidents can occur quickly, often taking only a few minutes for offenders to cut and remove the converter from a parked vehicle.
Catalytic converters are targeted due to the valuable precious metals they contain. While all vehicles can be affected, those with higher clearance are particularly vulnerable.
Recent activity shows higher concentrations of thefts in Bridgeland/Riverside and Hounsfield Heights, with ongoing concerns in the west parking lot at McMahon Stadium.

Vehicles commonly targeted include:
Mitsubishi RVR (2012–2025 models) – citywide
Honda CR-V (2003–2009 models)
Honda Element (2004–2010 models)
Honda Accord (2006 model)
CPS continues proactive enforcement and investigative efforts; however, prevention and awareness remain key. Community partners can play a vital role in reducing these incidents.
Prevention tips to share:
Engrave your catalytic converter with your VIN or licence plate number
Use car alarms and home security systems, including cameras
Park in a closed, secure garage when possible
If not available, park in well-lit, visible areas
What to watch for:
Individuals loitering or crawling under vehicles
Sounds of cutting or grinding
Suspicious activity in parking lots or residential areas
To report a theft, contact the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Call 911 if a crime is in progress.
We appreciate your continued partnership in helping raise awareness and prevent these crimes in our community.

We encourage community members to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activity. Please help share this message to reduce theft in our community.
