How can you give clients the wheel, without losing control?
Join Marcus M. Sixta and Benjamin Szalay‑Anderson of Crossroads Law for an insightful lunch n’ learn, in partnership with Edmonton Community Legal Centre, empowering self‑represented litigants in limited‑scope and clinic‑based settings.
This session explores how limited-scope services can help address the access to justice crisis by re-centering legal services around the client. You’ll learn practical strategies for running effective consultations, including how to adapt to the client in front of you and focus on what matters most, so they leave feeling supported and ready to move forward.
Attendees will leave with a practical framework for delivering real value in short consultations. Register online to secure your spot!

Before Legal Aid and other pro bono service entities, a small group of University of Alberta law students recognized a growing need for accessible legal support in Calgary. What began as a summer project in 1971 became the foundation for a lasting commitment to access to justice in our community.
These students saw that many individuals experiencing homelessness and low incomes were unable to access the legal assistance they needed. With the help of volunteer lawyers, community donations, and local supporters, they launched Student Legal Services to help fill that gap.
What started as an eight-week initiative quickly revealed the need for year-round legal services. In 1972, the organization was officially incorporated, continuing to expand its impact through volunteer lawyers, law students, and community partnerships.
In 1977, the organization became known as Calgary Legal Guidance. More than 50 years later, that same mission of making legal support accessible to those who need it most continues to guide our work every day.
A heartfelt thank you to the Calgary Bar Association for their generous donation raised at their annual golf tournament to support our Calgary Community Court (CCC) project. 💙
Because of your support, we’ve been able to:
• Create a basic needs pantry for participants experiencing poverty
• Purchase tablets to improve accessibility at CCC
• Enhance our reception space to better welcome and serve our community
Many of your members already give their time as volunteers—supporting clients through incredibly challenging moments with compassion and dignity. This contribution helps us continue and expand that impact.
In its pilot alone, CCC supported over 800 vulnerable Calgarians—providing legal guidance, connecting people to essential resources, and helping restore trust in systems meant to serve them.
We’re grateful to have you as partners in this work.
