We have received several calls today about dogs left unattended in vehicles. Thankfully, none of these incidents resulted in injury, but this is an important reminder to all Calgarians about the danger of leaving animals alone in vehicles.

Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels in minutes, putting animals at serious risk. A cracked window or water is no excuse & will not keep them safe.

🛑 If you love them, don’t leave them. Never leave an animal in a vehicle on a warm or hot day, even for a short time.

☎️ See an animal alone in a vehicle? Call 911 right away. Be ready to share your location & the vehicle’s licence plate, make/model & a brief description.

🗣️ You can also report concerns to the Calgary Humane Society at 403-205-4455.

Today is the National Day Against Gun Violence. Gun violence is about more than shootings & the data shows a broader reality.

Each day, we handle an average of 9 calls involving real or imitation fi****ms, whether suspected, discovered or confirmed. More than 80% of these calls are reported by a concerned member of the public, meaning Calgarians are encountering & reporting these situations the majority of the time & they’re happening across every quadrant of the city.

🚔 When our officers encounter fi****ms, it’s no longer isolated to just organized crime incidents. We now see fi****ms being illegally used in domestic violence, robberies, threats, stolen vehicles, property crime, drug-related crime & even youth-related incidents.

The real or perceived use of fi****ms creates very real victimization. We recognize this is a significant concern for our communities & addressing gun violence continues to be one of our top priorities.

ℹ️ Recent funding allocations from the Government of Canada & YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) has created additional capacity to analyze these incidents. Analysis & intelligence allow us to better investigate, enforce, suppress these incidents, while also conducting proactive offender management.

However, our efforts are only as strong as the information we have.

📢 If you have information about illegal firearm use, possession or storage, please contact police or Crime Stoppers.

As officers investigated, they determined the assault had occurred earlier that day, at about 1:30 p.m., in a grassy area just south of the Lions Park LRT Station platform, located between 14 Avenue & 13 Avenue N.W. Investigators collected CCTV footage from the station.
