Fun Fact Friday: What’s Beneath the Surface?
Ever wondered how we know the depth of a lake or what lies beneath the water’s surface?

The answer is bathymetry—the science of measuring water depth and mapping the underwater landscape, much like a topographic map does on land.

Historically, depths were measured using a weighted lead line lowered to the lake or ocean floor. It was accurate but slow, measuring one location at a time.

Today, technologies like multibeam sonar, GPS, and LiDAR can collect thousands of depth measurements quickly, creating highly detailed bathymetric maps.

Why does it matter? Bathymetric maps improve navigation safety, help anglers locate underwater structures and fish habitat, support environmental research, and assist with engineering projects and water resource management.
