The Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) has proposed capping insurance premiums for drivers in the province. While this may sound like a good idea for consumers, it could actually have negative consequences.
One issue with capping insurance premiums is that it could lead to a shortage of insurance options for consumers. Insurance companies rely on the premiums they charge to cover the costs of claims and to turn a profit. If the premiums they can charge are capped, they may decide to stop offering insurance in Alberta altogether, leading to less competition and fewer choices for consumers.
Another issue is that capping premiums could lead to insurance companies becoming less financially stable. If they are not able to charge enough to cover their costs, they may struggle to pay out on claims. This could lead to problems such as insurers going bankrupt, which would leave consumers without coverage or having to pay out of pocket for damages.
Additionally, capping premiums could result in higher deductibles for consumers. Insurance companies may try to offset the lower premiums by requiring consumers to pay more upfront before their coverage kicks in. This could make it harder for people to afford the insurance they need, particularly those on a tight budget.
In conclusion, while capping insurance premiums may seem like a good idea for consumers, it could actually lead to fewer choices, less financially stable insurance companies, and higher deductibles. It is important for policymakers to carefully consider the potential consequences of such a policy before implementing it.

Friendly Insurance PSA:
Anyone holding an insurance policy of any kind in Canada should read this linked article below!
If you have been questioning rising insurance premiums without notice, or want to understand what is going on with rising insurance rates, why there is no- tolerance on missed payments etc, this is insightful.
Also, know that the broker .."manages all aspects of the insurance transaction: determining the client's needs, recommending and requesting the appropriate policy, liasoning on payment arrangements and facilitating claims.."
When it comes to these changing terms, chances are that if you're angry with your broker, know that likely, you're actually angry with the company extending coverage. Alberta brokers are working hard and taking a lot of abuse right now as a front line to Canadian insurance companies taking a hard line with consumers- no tolerance on a missed payment, etc.
Just know where to direct your comments or providing customer feedback/reviews constructively and effectively!
