Watching these paddleboarders out on the ocean yesterday, made me realize -again- how many people buy a paddleboard without knowing what they're getting into. It looks easy to do and so much fun. And it is a lot of fun!!! Hey, it's our passion!
But please people, educate yourself, mainly on safety, which is a big part of our lessons.
These lovely people are out on the ocean, no PFD, no ankle leash, one even brought a dog, starting with wind in the back ... meaning they got farther out than likely planned, and ended up in the midsts of boat traffic. They were fighting the wind, which was blowing them offshore, fell in and couldn't get back on their board until they swam to shore... No whistle with them to use for assistance ... I kept an eye on them until they finally were able to paddle and swam back into the 'safe zone' of the cove, exhausted ...
To start with: wear a PFD, ankle leash, whistle, phone, go with a buddy, know the wind/ weather forecast and the current. Make sure you know how to get back on your board when you fall off or how to help your buddy get back on their board. Know what to do in windy and wave conditions ...
Yes, there is much more to paddleboarding then just standing up and paddling.
