Representing the healing of spiritual death (evolution) and the flow of consciousness after physical death (reincarnation) for ancient cultures.
... until monotheistic faiths colonized minds to have a negative view of the serpent god, replacing the evolution of consciousness with a heaven or hell after life, and introducing the duality of "good" and "bad" and a "devil" to represent what monotheism perceives as "evil".
