Since 2013, the has used Orange Shirt Day to acknowledge the ongoing impact of residential schools on Indigenous communities. September 30 was chosen because it marks the time of year when children were forcibly taken from their homes to attend these schools.

The orange shirt symbol originates from Phyllis (Jack) Webstad’s powerful story of her first day at a residential school. As a six-year-old, her new orange shirt, a gift from her grandmother, was taken away by school administrators, symbolizing the loss and trauma experienced by countless Indigenous children and their families.

We encourage you to explore the history of residential schools, their lasting impact on Indigenous communities, and the ongoing journey towards healing.
