It may seem early to be thinking about window coverings when your home is at framing stage, but this is actually one of the most important times to plan ahead.
At this point, it’s not about fabric or style—it’s about functionality.
When electrical rough-in begins, consider these three options to best suite your window covering needs:
1. Manual window coverings- no electrical rough-in is required.
2. Motorized window coverings - electrical rough-in should be installed near the future location of your drapery or shades. Coordinating with your designer, electrician and window covering specialist early helps ensure everything is in place when it’s time to install.
3. Not sure yet? Rough in the electrical anyway. It’s a relatively small investment during construction and gives you flexibility if you decide to go motorized later.
A few additional considerations:
• Add backing above windows during framing to properly support drapery hardware. Drapery can be surprisingly heavy.
• If electrical wasn’t roughed in, battery-operated motorized options are also available.
Window coverings may be one of the last design elements to be installed, but the planning happens much earlier. These small decisions can make a big difference in how your home functions and feels for years to come.
