Be wary of scammers this post-holiday season. With the influx of online shopping and those looking for Boxing Day deals, scammers are getting very sophisticated, to the point of understanding buyer behaviour.

For example, we've seen phishing campaigns where the scammer sends out a limited-time discount code which leads to a fake copy of a real business's website containing a payment gateway that gets deposited to the scammer. Both scamming you out of your purchase and providing them with your payment details and personal information.

Here are a few things to watch for this Boxing Day:
- Don't trust an email you didn't subscribe to receive

- When in doubt, manually enter or Google the name of the business and go to the website directly from your search engine, never through a link from an email

- Check the website URL and social handles for irregularities. Scammers often recreate profiles using names that are very close to the original (for example, amazon . com but a hacker may create a url amazen . com that may be easy for the eyes to miss)

- If it looks too good to be true, contact the company for confirmation it is legitimate
