Glenbow

Toronto artist An Te Liu (b. 1967) has created everything from enormous installation works to letterpress prints, but he is perhaps best known for his work in ceramic and bronze.
While his early sculptures often integrated consumer goods such as humidifiers and air purifiers, he later became interested in the materials used to package consumer goods, particularly polystyrene (often called Styrofoam).
Liu collected pieces of discarded packaging he felt had striking forms and used them as the foundations for his sculptures, which evoke both the discarded packaging and the original goods held by the packages.
On our blog, learn about how Liu's interests in consumer goods and art history have inspired his unique approach to sculpture: https://bit.ly/3PMNgzB

May the fourth be with you! Did you know Glenbow has an expansive collection of toys from the 19th and 20th centuries? In honour of Star Wars Day, we’re spotlighting a few recent acquisitions from a galaxy far, far away.
These Star Wars action figures were part of a donor’s childhood toy collection, received on Christmases and birthdays over the years. As the youngest child, his toys were often hand-me-downs — so when he received these new, he took special care of them by saving many of the accessories and keeping them in great condition.
These figures are from the Kenner toy brand’s original Star Wars line, which ran from 1978 to 1985. Consisting of 96 action figures, vehicles, and playsets, the line was incredibly popular, selling more than 300 million units during its original run.
