PCOS has a new name: PMOS.

The condition long known as Polycystic O***y Syndrome is now called Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.

In Canada, PCOS affects an estimated 1 in 10 women.

The name change matters because PCOS is not definied by cysts only. Many people with the condition do not have abnormal ovarian cysts, and the old name often narrowed public and clinical understanding of the condition. People with PCOS often experience problems with hormones, metabolism, skin, mental health, fertility, as long-term health issues.

The new name, PMOS, better reflects what this condition is: a complex hormonal and metabolic disorder.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada shared that PMOS recognizes the condition as more than ovarian cysts and helps address misconceptions, delayed diagnoses, and gaps in care.

This is why language matters.

A more accurate name can support earlier diagnosis, better research, more informed care, and greater recognition of the full-body impact of this condition.
