Cindy Blackstock: A relentless champion for Indigenous children's rights.
She serves as executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, whose litigation against Canada has secured hundreds of thousands of services for First Nations. She filed the original complaint against Ottawa with the Assembly of First Nations in 2007, and launched the human rights complaint that led to today’s ruling; the Federal Court dismissed an application for a judicial review of a landmark human rights tribunal compensation order for First Nations children — leaving the federal government on the hook for billions of dollars in compensation related to the child welfare system.
“If we can raise a generation of non-Indigenous kids who don’t normalize discrimination, and have the tools to peacefully and respectfully advocate for the end of this kind of apartheid system, then we’ll be in a position where First Nations children never have to recover from their childhoods again,” Cindy Blackstock says. “And non-Indigenous children never have to say they’re sorry.”

Teaching and leading through the Indigenous Ways of Knowing requires reconciliation and reconciliation requires us to know the parts of history we weren’t told or taught in school. You’re not alone. It took me two years of research to uncover most of it from the Indigenous perspective. Once we understand the rights Indigenous Peoples had, we will understand how they were taken away and begin to ask the right questions. Then, we can all walk together towards a social just Canada.

Intergenerational trauma can be genetically detected in up to 3 subsequent generations.
Indigenous People suffer from severed belonging and exclusion. Radical compassion is embodied when It's inclusive. It's only through this we can build pathways together and share in a journey towards healing. Through stories, we start to enter lives and share the pain.
The widening circle starts with sharing stories of pain. What's it like to be this person? What is this person believing about the world that's causing hurt? What are they living with?
Sense the fear and disappointment. We respond by releasing and sending our love through acknowledgement and awareness.
We are stronger together in our truth and reconciliation.Separation causes suffering. Let's begin sharing stories that build a co-authored journey and story of Canada; a shared identity.
May this serve awakening; can we be a little kinder and give each other back our wings.
