Today we celebrate the birthday, the life and the legacy of the late Gilbert Baker, born June 2nd, 1951. On June, 25th, 1978, Gilbert Baker gave the world the first original Pride flag, which was unveiled at the San Francisco Gay and Le***an Freedom Day Parade. In the days leading up to the parade, a group of 30 volunteers, led by Baker, gathered at the Gay Community Center in San Francisco to hand-dye and stitch rainbow flags for the parade. Little did they know they would be defining the modern LGBT2SQ+ movement and providing a symbol of hope and unity for the entire community.
The original flag included eight colors, each with their own symbolic meaning. Due to cost and availability of supplies, the design was later revised to remove two colors, pink & turquoise, with the intent of adding those colors back when they became more readily available and cost effective. This gave us the 6-stripe flag that is most commonly seen today.
