How Does Ontario's Graduated Licensing System Work?

Ontario uses a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) to help new drivers gain experience safely and confidently before earning a full driver's license.

🟢 Step 1 – Get Your G1 License

✅ Minimum age: 16 years
✅ Pass a vision test and written knowledge test
✅ Practice driving with a fully licensed driver (4+ years' experience) in the front passenger seat
✅ Follow G1 driving restrictions

🔵 Step 2 – Get Your G2 License

How Can Tourists and Visitors Get an Ontario Driver's Licence?

Many newcomers, international students, temporary workers, and visitors ask us how Ontario's driver's licence system works.

✅ Tourists & Short-Term Visitors
If you are visiting Ontario for less than 3 months, you can usually drive with a valid driver's licence from your home country, province, or state. If you are visiting from another country for more than 3 months, it is recommended that you obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before arriving in Canada.

✅ New Residents of Ontario
If you become an Ontario resident, you can use your foreign or out-of-province licence for up to 60 days. After that, you must obtain an Ontario driver's licence if you wish to continue driving.

📝 What You May Need:

✔ Valid driver's licence from your home country
✔ Proof of identity and date of birth
✔ Translation of your licence (if not in English or French)
✔ Proof of driving experience
✔ Vision test
