The world has lost some of its color, and its details have become more gray than they used to be. Color didn’t disappear suddenly — it faded gradually through the everyday objects we use: from the furniture we choose, to the rooms we live in, to the cars we drive, to buildings designed to be “acceptable to everyone” without drawing attention. An analysis conducted by the Science Museum’s collection of 7,083 images of everyday objects showed that modern products have become more inclined toward gray, and more reliant on sharp, simple forms over time. This trend extends to the automotive world as well, where Axalta’s 2025 report indicates that white, black, gray, and silver made up 81% of new car colors. What sometimes appears to be “modern taste” is in many cases the result of practical and economic considerations — neutral designs are easier to produce, more broadly accepted in sales, and less risky to remarket. And so, the world hasn’t become colorless… but colors themselves have become less bold, and more cautious than they once were.
