⚽ 🐾 Fun Fact Thursday: Play Isn't a Break From Training... It IS Training. 🐾⚽

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that training only happens when you have a handful of treats.

In reality, play is one of the greatest teaching opportunities you'll ever have with your dog.

Every game is full of choices.

Will they wait before chasing the toy?
Will they bring it back?
Will they let go when asked?
Can they stop, think, and reconnect with you before the game continues?

Those aren't just "play skills." They're life skills.

But here's something that surprises many people...

Your dog has to be allowed to make mistakes.

That might sound strange, but think about it.

If you never give your dog the opportunity to make the wrong choice, you'll never have the opportunity to teach them the right one.

Mistakes aren't failures—they're information.

Imagine you're teaching your dog to wait before chasing a ball.

You ask for a sit, but they break the sit and take off before you throw it.

Perfect.

Not because you wanted them to fail, but because now you have something to teach.

Instead of getting frustrated, simply reset. Calmly bring them back, ask for the sit again, and when they succeed, that's when the game begins.

Your dog learns something incredibly valuable:

"The game doesn't start because I want it to. The game starts because I made a good choice."

That's far more powerful than simply preventing them from ever making a mistake.

Training isn't about creating a robot that never gets it wrong.

It's about helping your dog become a problem solver.

Every time your dog makes a mistake and you patiently show them a better answer, they're learning how to learn. They're discovering which choices lead to rewards and which ones don't.

That's why play is such an amazing teacher.

The reward is already exciting. The only question is, what does your dog have to do to earn it?

💡 Try this today:
Play a game of tug or fetch, but before each round ask for one simple behaviour like a sit, eye contact, or a drop.

If your dog gets too excited and forgets? Don't get upset.

Smile.

You just found your next teaching moment.

Every mistake is simply another opportunity to show your dog what does work.

Because in great training, we don't punish mistakes...

We teach better choices. ❤️🐾
