I became a tailor without ever stepping into a tailoring school.
The day my dad bought my mom a sewing machine, something changed. I immediately said yes to fashion and design. My mom, on the other hand, felt she was too educated to become a tailor… so guess who took over the machine? 😄
I learned how to sew before I turned 14.
As I went through school, fashion and design wasn’t exactly in my frontal lobe, but I loved it deeply. My dream at the time was actually to become a nurse… but life had other plans.
Today, I guess you could say I doctor clothes instead. 🤣
After high school, I joined my dad and brother in Nakuru after studying in Busia for four years. (Primary school nilisomea Nakuru.)
My dad must have noticed how much I loved sewing because he enrolled me in a fashion course. Ironically, I didn’t want it. I attended for only one month… then I quit.
Why?
Because I wanted to study IT.
In the late 2000s, almost every Form Four leaver wanted to do something in IT. I enrolled for a diploma in IT, and honestly, I excelled. After three years, I graduated, excited to enter the job market.
Then reality hit.
Kazi wapi? 😭
So, guess where I slowly crawled back to?
Yes… the mighty fashion and design.
I connected with a guy who was making clothes using denim and asked if I could learn from him. Just two weeks later, I made a pair of trousers for a client.
And guess what?
Your girl was paid real cash. KES. Straight to the hand. 💰🤑
At that moment, I knew there was no turning back.
I dove in headfirst and learned very fast. That’s how I became a fundi. Not because someone forced me into it, but because the passion was always there — it had simply moved from the back of my mind to the very front of my life.
So tell me…
How did you end up in the job you’re doing today?
Next time, I’ll tell you what eventually happened with my IT career. 😉
