I find that once you start to trial your dog, she/he will do things in the ring that they do not do in training. Mistakes/errors will happen and you need to problem-solve and find ways to re-create the issue so you can show them the correct behaviour.
I have 50 years experience in obedience trialing. I know what green dogs can go through when you first start showing them, and also what seasoned dogs may experience throughout their trial career. While a few dogs many not find the change to an actual trial challenging the majority of dogs will react to the pressure in one way or another.
Preparing your dog for the ring is an extensive process, consequently, many people fail to prepare their dogs properly, resulting in performances that do not meet their expectations. For this very reason I produced a video series called RING READY to help handlers prepare their dog for the ring - it covers the many, many, many things you need to teach & exposure your dog to BEFORE ever stepping foot into the ring. If you want to give your dog the best chance at success possible, this video is for you, and bonus it is on sale!
TIP: If you are having difficulties with your own dog I highly suggest you consult a trainer who has the knowledge and experience to get you through the rough times. Someone with extensive trial knowledge, gained from handling their own dogs. Having someone watch you and give feedback can make a huge difference. If you see me at a show and I am relaxing (and without my dog) please feel free to approach me if you would like some feedback or have a question.
I have trialed 15 dogs to UD level over my decades of showing. I've seen and dealt with a lot! Not only a lot of success but also a lot of problem solving when my dogs make errors at trials.

My competition obedience show season typically runs from late September through early June, during the summer months, my focus shifts to retriever field work.
I started off 2026 in March with Chime in Novice - she earned her first CD leg with a 199 and finished her Am CD with more top scores. In May she earned her first 2 AKC CDX legs both with High in Trials.
Unfortunately, Catch was in recovery & rehab for his biceps from December through to early March. By the end of March he was able to compete again and with very little prep he amazed me by earning his Am. UD title and is now collecting OTCH points.
πWe completed our last trial of the season this past weekend, competing only one day June 7th. My goal was to finish Chime's CKC CD title and Catch's CDX. My expectations were surpassed by Chime earning a π₯perfect 200 score π₯and Catch a 199. Thank you Judge Eve O'Keefe. It was the most incredible and rewarding way to conclude our obedience season.
