A senior Directorate of Intelligence and Security officer has quietly exited the countryβs spy agency after being cornered over allegations involvingthe abuse of state vehicles.
Tuesday Grill has established that former DIS Director of Transport Moakofi Modisenyane resigned at the end of last month after allegedly being presented with two options, resign or face disciplinary action.
Sources close to the matter say the fallout followed internal investigations into the alleged misuse of intelligence vehicles for private errands, including repeated trips to farms using state resources assigned to national security operations.
The developments come amid growing tensions within the intelligence agency over the conduct of senior officers and the use of government property, issues that have increasingly placed the DIS under internal and public scrutiny.
Sources familiar with the matter say Modisenyaneβs departure was far from voluntary.
βHe was essentially cornered. The message was clear, resign quietly or face a full disciplinary process,β a highly placed source told Tuesday Grill.
According to information gathered by this publication, internal surveillance and monitoring allegedly picked up repeated movements of DIS vehicles on trips believed to have had no operational connection to intelligence work.
Investigators are said to have questioned why
vehicles meant for sensitive state assignments were allegedly being diverted for personal activities.Sources further revealed that the matter became increasingly difficult to suppress after details of the alleged abuse began circulating internally within the agency.
Modisenyane, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), previously served within the Central Transport Organization (CTO) before later joining the DIS during the era of former spy chief Isaac Kgosi. Over the years, he became one of the agencyβs influential operational figures and recently sat on Board of Inquiry II, which investigated suspended DIS agents including Pulane Kgaodi and Paul Setlhabi. Ironically, insiders now say the veteran intelligence officer later found himself under scrutiny over conduct considered inconsistent with DIS regulations and expectations.
The latest developments have also revived attention around the office of the Assistant Deputy Director General, where investigations linked to the alleged misuse of a state-issued DIS vehicle during a suspected breach of Foot and Mouth Disease regulations in Tlokweng have reportedly reached Magosiβs desk.
As previously reported by Tuesday Grill, the senior officerβs wife was allegedly intercepted by police and veterinary officials while driving a white Toyota Fortuner reportedly assigned to the intelligence boss.
