As the curtains closed on the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence commemorations, let us not pack away our commitment with the banners and slogans. The fight for the wellbeing and safety of Women and Children isn't confined to a calendar, it's a daily imperative.
In Botswana and beyond, GBV remains a shadow that haunts too many lives. From physical abuse to emotional scars, from street harassment to systemic inequalities, we must remain vigilant every single day. As a community Leader and Advocate, I've seen the resilience of survivors, but I've also witnessed the preventable tragedies when we let our guard down.
Let's pledge to:
Educate ourselves and others on recognising signs of abuse.
Support organisations like Women Against R**e and Gender Links that provide crucial services.
Hold perpetrators accountable through legal and social means.
Foster safe spaces in homes, schools, and workplaces.
Amplify voices of the marginalised, ensuring no one is left behind.
Remember, change starts with us. Today, tomorrow, always. Report abuse, seek help, be the ally. Together, we can build a society where every Woman and Child thrives without fear.

Today, on International Human Rights Day, I, Ms. Maatla Komaetsile, Botswana Country Director, Global Peace Chain, affirm our collective duty to prioritise Human Rights Education for Youth as the cornerstone of resilient, rights-respecting societies.
Education and awareness empower young people to identify, prevent, and challenge Human Rights abuses and violations, Gender‑Based Violence, Femicide and Inhuman and Degrading practices, dismantling norms that perpetuate harm. We also solemnly remember Children subjected to atrocities in the numerous conflict‑affected regions of Africa and call for protective frameworks, accountability, and trauma‑informed support. Let commemoration catalyse policy, pedagogy, and partnership for lasting protection and dignity.
Happy International Human Rights Day!
