ππ.ππ.ππππ, ππππ¨π«π¨π§π:Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Honourable Ramaotwana Nelson Ramaotwana, has commended the University of Botswana for creating a practical and innovative platform that bridges academic learning with real-world criminal justice challenges. He made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at the University of Botswanaβs CJS327 Forensic Criminology Annual Murder Mystery Ball and Stakeholder Engagement (AMMSE) 2026, held at the UB Indoor Sports Arena.
Honourable Ramaotwana noted that while Botswana has made commendable progress in reducing certain categories of crime, emerging threats such as cybercrime, fraud, money laundering and digital financial scams continue to present serious challenges that require stronger forensic and investigative capacity.
The Minister emphasised that crimes involving fraud, cyber-enabled financial crimes and economic corruption are increasingly affecting businesses, financial institutions and ordinary citizens, with some cases resulting in significant financial losses and reduced public trust in institutions. He stressed that these developments call for a more coordinated, science-driven and technology-based response to crime prevention and investigation.
Honourable Ramaotwana further highlighted that initiatives such as AMMSE 2026 directly support Botswanaβs Vision 2036 aspirations under the Governance, Peace and Security pillar, as well as Sustainable Development Goal 16, which promotes peace, justice and strong institutions. He described the event as more than an academic exercise, but rather a strategic investment in building the next generation of forensic investigators, cybersecurity analysts, fraud examiners and justice professionals.
The Minister reaffirmed Governmentβs commitment to strengthening Botswanaβs forensic criminology ecosystem through continued investment in digital investigations, forensic laboratories, evidence infrastructure and stronger collaboration between universities, law enforcement and industry. He also underscored the importance of legislative and policy reforms to support digital evidence, victim protection and prosecutorial integrity.
The event brought together students, academics, law enforcement agencies, forensic practitioners and key justice sector stakeholders to explore the evolving role of forensic criminology in strengthening Botswanaβs justice system.

Empowering Women, Transforming Futures πΌβ¨
A special one-day Women Empowerment Workshop was successfully hosted through the collaboration of Hon. Dorcus M Oboetswe and Rio Trade Enterprises Management, bringing together 20 inspiring women from across Gaborone South Constituency.
The workshop focused on uplifting informal sector women by equipping them with practical business knowledge and strategies to build sustainable ventures, especially in todayβs challenging economic climate.
In her welcome remarks, Hon. Dorcus Oboetswe highlighted the vital role women play in nation-building, encouraging participants to embrace the opportunity with confidence, determination, and a strong business mindset.
Rio Trade Enterprises shared their vision, aligning with the Presidential initiative to create 500,000 jobs. This led to the formation of βBasadi Ikagengβ, a womenβs empowerment group aimed at mentoring and supporting women to run successful and impactful businesses.
As part of this initiative, opportunities have also been created for the Old Naledi community, where residents are now engaged in designing cigarette display stands to support these women entrepreneurs.
Beyond empowerment, the initiative contributes to reducing illegal cigarette imports by promoting locally manufactured products.
Rio Trade Enterprise, a proudly local cigarette manufacturer based in Gaborone (Phakalane), continues to make a difference by creating employment for 50 Batswana citizens.
Together, we rise. Together, we build. πͺπ§πΌ
