Top 5 risks for insomnia include:
1. Behaviours and lifestyle. Travelling, studying and shift work can affect the sleep-wake cycle.
2. Environment. Noise or light, using electronic devices, and uncomfortably high or low temperatures.
3. Family history and genetics. Certain genes may affect sleep patterns. For example, COMT, a gene which is linked to dopamine metabolism, can affect our anxiety levels. Genetics also impacts the production of serotonin, which is necessary for releasing melatonin.
4. Gender. More women than men get insomnia, possibly due to hormonal changes. Pregnancy and menopause can also play a role.
5. Stress. Worry raises the risk of insomnia. Worrying about not getting enough sleep can make it worse.
