Yield Estimates During Drilling

Yield estimates measure the amount of water a borehole can produce over a set period. This information is crucial for determining whether the borehole can meet the water needs of crops and livestock and what pump capacity to install when equipping.

They are often conducted using a V-notch weir. Water is directed through the V-shaped notch, and the height of the water flowing over the notch is measured. This height is used to calculate the flow rate, providing an accurate estimate of the borehole’s yield.

Yield estimates are conducted at two key stages:

1. During Drilling: Each time water is struck, the yield is measured.
2. After Borehole Development: Once the borehole is cleaned and stabilized, a final yield measurement is taken to determine its final yield estimate .

Yield estimates ensure sustainable water use and prevent over-extraction. They help farmers plan their water usage to meet agricultural needs, inform decisions about which farming activities to engage in, and determine the appropriate pump capacity, preventing costly over-extraction.

Accurate yield estimates are vital for effective water resource management, ensuring that farmers can sustainably and efficiently use their boreholes.

Ensure your drill measures the borehole yield during drilling and after development
