Did you know that sand colic is a common problem for horses that graze on sandy soil or eat off the ground? Sand particles can accumulate in the horse's digestive tract, causing irritation and inflammation.
Symptoms of sand colic may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and reduced appetite. In severe cases, sand colic can lead to impaction and require surgery.
To treat sand colic, your veterinarian may recommend a laxative, such as mineral oil or psyllium, to help move the sand through the digestive tract. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the impacted sand.
Prevention is key when it comes to sand colic. Here are a few tips to keep your horse safe:
Provide a clean, grassy area for your horse to graze on.
Use feeders or hay nets to prevent your horse from eating off the ground.
Avoid feeding on sandy soil or allowing your horse to graze in sandy pastures.
Consider feeding psyllium husk supplements to help flush out any sand particles.
Remember, prevention is always better than treatment when it comes to sand colic. If you suspect your horse may be suffering from sand colic, contact your veterinarian right away for treatment options.
