Civil Engineering in SRM 2026: Showcasing Innovation & Excellence

The Student Research Meet (SRM) 2026, held on 16th May 2026 at the College of Science and Technology, celebrated innovation, creativity, and academic excellence by providing a platform for students to present their research through oral and poster presentations. Representing this spirit of inquiry and engineering excellence, the Civil Engineering department participated with 4 final-year research groups: 1 oral presentation and 3 poster presentations, showcasing strong research capability and innovative problem solving.
๐Ÿ”น Research Presentation:
โ€ข Development and Seismic Evaluation of Interlocking Adobe Bricks with Natural Shear Keys
๐Ÿ”น Poster Presentations:
โ€ข Study on the Structural Viability and Performance of the Bhutanese Timber Column Based on Experimental and Numerical Assessment
โ€ข Landslide Hazard Assessment, Slope Monitoring, and Mitigation Strategies for Wangdigatshel
โ€ข Machine Learning Based Adaptive Speed Limit with Real Time Data at Babesa Expressway, Thimphu

We are especially proud to share that Civil Engineering achieved outstanding success in the Poster Presentation category:
๐Ÿฅ‡ 1st Position: Machine Learning Based Adaptive Speed Limit with Real Time Data at Babesa Expressway, Thimphu
๐Ÿฅˆ 2nd Position: Landslide Hazard Assessment, Slope Monitoring, and Mitigation Strategies for Wangdigatshel

Congratulations to all our participants for representing the Civil Engineering family with excellence, innovation, and dedication at SRM 2026. Your achievements continue to make the department proud! ๐Ÿ‘

Collaborative Outlook on Technological Innovation and Synergies in Solid Waste Management (SWM): Learning Across Borders

A team of five Civil Engineering students from the College of Science and Technology (CST) represented our institution at the Indiaโ€“Bhutan Student & Faculty Exchange Program, held in Thimphu, Bhutan from 6thโ€“7th May 2026, alongside participants from JNEC, IIT Guwahati, and NIT Rourkela.

Over two days, the programme offered a rich blend of keynote sessions and field visits covering:
- Solid waste management practices, key statistics, and community impact in Thimphu
- Plastic waste innovation โ€” from Mr. Rikesh Gurung's Green Roads initiative to Greener Way's recycled plastic fencing posts
- JICA's initiatives in improving waste management, presented by Mr. Krishna S***a, Chief Program Officer
- Field visits to the Greener Way Waste Transfer Section in Babesa and the Memelakha facility for wet and hazardous waste management

A truly enriching experience that broadened our perspectives on sustainable engineering and reinforced the value of learning across borders.

Sincere gratitude to JNEC, NITR, IITG, CST, and the Government of India (GoI) and India Bhutan Foundation for making this programme possible, and to all speakers and organisations for their valuable insights.

Mr. Yeshi Singye from the Civil Engineering Programme successfully participated in a study visit to Karigar Shala Trust from 15th to 16th April 2026 funded by ECRUL. The institute is widely recognized for its commitment to preserving and promoting traditional construction practices through hands-on learning and skill development.

During the visit, the participant gained valuable exposure to sustainable building techniques such as sandstone masonry, rammed earth wall construction, and adobe-based load-bearing systems. The training emphasized the importance of locally available materials and indigenous knowledge in achieving environmentally responsive and cost-effective construction.

Key highlights included the observation of innovative methods like mud-roll ceilings and a uniquely restrained cantilever roofing system using tension cables. In addition, practical sessions on soil composition analysis and an introduction to colour theory enhanced the overall learning experience.

This opportunity marks an important step in strengthening practical knowledge and bridging the gap between traditional construction practices and modern engineering approaches. The experience is expected to contribute significantly to future academic and professional pursuits in the field of civil engineering.

The Civil Engineering Department, CST would like to express its sincere gratitude to Karigar Shala Trust for their invaluable support, knowledge sharing, and hospitality during the study visit. For further communication, they may be contacted at [email protected]
